This book is a ‘self-help’ guide intended for a readership ranging in age from fourteen to one hundred. Through a synthesis of spiritual, existential, and psychological approaches, the reader is provided with helpful, practical concepts about life and its meaning. These teachings are conveyed through the author’s autobiographical journey, which is, in part, fictionalized, as it describes his coming of age in Iceland and journey to becoming a psychologist. Icelandic folklore, with tales of ghosts, elves, and trolls, is woven into a young boy’s experience as he meets his spiritual guide. The spiritual guide describes to him how the universe is constructed and how he creates his personal reality within it. He learns about fate, free will and meaning, and how to avoid common pitfalls in the experience of love, anger, depression, and guilt. These spiritual and existential teachings, along with practical psychological concepts, help him overcome a lack of self-confidence and low self-esteem and come to terms with his sexuality. A reader familiar with the existential theories of the late Dr. Victor Frankl; the discarnate entity Seth, who was channeled by the late Jane Roberts in the 1960s; Neale Donald Walsh’s Conversations with God; and Dr. Michael Newton’s writings on life-between-life regression will recognize the influence these authors have had in the development and shaping of this work, which is a synthesis of their concepts in addition to the author’s own insights, gained through his career as a therapist.

The following year, at the age of seventeen, Rikki resolved to visit Old Soul again. Five years had passed since they had last met, and he had a lot of questions about life that needed answers. After he had returned home to the city, in preparation for another school year, Rikki decided to go for a short visit to his uncle’s farm up north, at Lakjamot. It was early October and an exciting time at the farm. The hundreds of horses that belonged to all the farms in the district were being herded off the highlands and back to the farms in the valley. The farm was bustling with activity, but Rikki managed to find time to ride his horse, Trust, who was now getting on in years, out to Heather Hill for a visit with Old Soul. As before, Rikki made his way up onto the rock, walked in circles—thrice clockwise and thrice anti-clockwise—before standing still and facing Heather Hill while thinking a loving thought of his horse, Trust. Time stood still. Heather Hill opened and Old Soul came to the door and welcomed him warmly before leading him into his private study, as he had done on their first visit.

This time, Rikki had prepared a long list of questions, which included questions about life and death and the reasons for tragedies, including the death of his friends and the illness of the two boys at Holar that had left them mentally delayed and paralyzed. He was interested in hearing what Old Soul had to say about his spirit brother, who was growing up in the spiritual dimension. Last but not least, he wanted advice about his sexual orientation.

Old Soul seemed to know what questions Rikki wanted to ask of him and said, “You have prepared a number of important questions for me, but before I can give you the answers to these questions I’ll need to provide you with some background information about the nature of your existence within the physical world.”

Rikki, remembering how time had stood still during their last meeting, said jokingly, “This will not take a lot of time, will it?” Old Soul, with a smile, responded, “No, you are at this moment outside the dimension of time, but I will tell you more about that in a few minutes, so to speak!”

Rikki smiled and relaxed the best he could, seated on the same stool he had sat on during their first meeting. When he looked around, he seemed to have a view of the entire spiritual universe, despite being in the confines of Old Soul’s study. It seemed a little odd to him that he could sit in Old Soul’s study, yet see an entire universe. But this is what it was, and it was breathtaking.

Book Review: SLICE OF LIFE: A Self-Help Odyssey In the words of the great Albert Einstein, "If I can't explain the most complicated concept to the man who operates the elevator when I leave home after a day's work then I don't understand it myself." With that thought in mind the author Rick Lindal simplifies a very difficult understanding into this wonderful book that he writesexplaining how the universe is constructed and how we create our own reality within it. He shares his coming-of-age story with his readers. He writes his book as a storytelling of a young boy thru his adulthood. His main guidance is "Old Soul" who he communicates with and "Old Soul" gives him words of wisdom so that he can fully understand and make his own judgments in his own lif. This is a "MUST READ" book for anyone in their teens up to a few days before you die! It is a real eye-opening! Whether you believe in the here after or not, this is a very thought-provoking read. It deals with so many issues that one needs to face in life such as the basic universe, the basic physical body, core beliefs and their effect on your reality, love and sex, fate, free will, uniqueness, aging, death, fear, anxiety, anger, depression, guilt, power and all the many things that one deals with as we go thru life. This is an extremely easy read foranyone of any age. It is to the point, very exacting and extremely professionally written. One HAS to be unique and that is the one quality that sets you apart from the millions of other people on earth. Particularly enjoyable reading was about the "10 percent Rule" where the author relates that 10 percent of the people that you meet will like you, 80 percent don't care who you are, and 10 percent won't like you - even before you open your mouth.
As you go through life, not everyone is going to like you no matter how fun, wonderful and interesting you are! With so much emphasis on "bullying" in the school systems today, this book needs to be in every school library as well as in all public libraries. The author relates thru his "storytelling effect" a wonderful experience of "Rikki" who learns from his own experiences aswell as with the guidance and help of "Old Soul". This is a very deep and intellectual reading and you will be thinking about it for days, weeks, months and even years after you have read it. It brings into focus many unanswered questions about the great mysteries of life itself. We only wish that we had read this book years ago. Every teenager starting out in life should be forced to read this book as it will certainly help them prepare for a life of their own. However one is never to old to read this book as it helps in your day to day living structure. Very few books have affected us the way this book has. We highly recommend this book! What a wonderful book! I love the way Rick Lindal takes the wisdom teachings of Seth and Victor Frankl and makes them so accessible. This book has the best take on the relationship between fate and free will that I have yet encountered. I am using the core belief teachings in my daily life. I also enjoyed learning about Rikki's personal journey through life, and his victories. How can you not root for such a sweet and sensitive person!
