Fascinating Womanhood is a guide to a happy marriage and a two million best seller. Its success, however, is not measured so much by the number of copies sold as by the lives it has changed. The impact it has had on marriages has been phenomenal, as evidenced by the thousands of testimonials, many which have been included in her book. Through Fascinating Womanhood there is hope of a new generation of women – happy, feminine, adored and cherished. This would invoke a new generation of men - masculine and chivalrous. This claim is expressed in the author’s own words: “I am more convinced than ever that these teachings are true, and that this knowledge is the most urgently needed knowledge in the world today. This claim is not unreasonable. A loving marriage is the foundation of a happy family, and a happy family is the foundation of a stable society. Most of the problems in this world stem from troubled homes. If we are to have peace in the world we must begin at home.” Fascinating Womanhood is not a book of rules to be memorized and applied, then put aside when they become tiresome. Rather, it forever changes the way a woman thinks, the way she views her husband and herself, a way that is new to most women. The experiences of Fascinating Womanhood indicate that women are the same everywhere, regardless of race, religion or culture. Women the world over want to be loved and cherished, cared for and treasured. When they apply these teachings, results are earth shaking. Helen Andelin has been interviewed by all the major newspapers, TV, and radio programs in the US to a total of over 300 programs. She has been a featured guest on numerous national shows, among them Phil Donahue, Barbara Walters, Hugh Downs and Larry King. She has also made personal appearances in Brazil, Japan, Australia and The Philippines. Fascinating Womanhood has been translated into Spanish, French, Portuguese, Japanese and Indonesian. She is currently writing a monthly advice column on the Internet called Marriage, The Fascinating Way, which includes a monthly message, questions and answers and success stories. The web address of her monthly column is www.fascinatingwomanhood.net. Helen Andelin is the wife of Aubrey Andelin, a former dentist and author of the well-known book, Man of Steel and Velvet. The Andelins are the parents of eight children, four sons and four daughters. Helen is also the author of a book to single women, The Fascinating Girl and a book to parents, All About Raising Children.
Celestial Love is a term I have used to describe the highest kind of tender a man can feel for a woman, or a woman can feel for a man. It is another name for true love, romantic love or story book love. Romantic love is the center of every woman’s happiness. Even in childhood little girls have tender dreams of romance in which they are the beautiful princess sought by the handsome prince. Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella are favorites with little girls and revered by women of all ages. This tender story book love is what every woman has longed for since the world began. It has always been the theme of great operas, novels and songs. Romantic love, the most moving force in life rightfully deserves our study and consideration. The single girl must first bring her man to true love before he will have the courage to take the big step of marriage. Many fears stand in his way. Only the force of love will cause him to sacrifice his freedom, tax his usually limited resources and undertake the heavy responsibility of marriage. After marriage a woman must strive earnestly to maintain her husband’s love if she is to make the ultimate success of her family life. I can assure every young woman that she can both win and maintain her husband’s love by following established principles outlined in this book. How does a man feel when he is in love, really in love? It has been described as an intense feeling, almost like pain. He may feel exuberant and light, like walking on a cloud. Or he may feel a loss of appetite or hot fiery flashes. The girl may fascinate and amuse him, casting a sort of spell over him. Along with all of these thrilling and consuming sensations there is a tenderness, a desire to protect and shelter this girl from all danger and difficulty. Then there is the deeper, more spiritual feeling almost like worship. Even this cannot adequately describe the many splendored feeling called love. When a woman is in love it is pretty much the same, except she does not feel the tender, protective feelings a man does. The following are vivid examples of a man’s true love for a woman. John Alden and Priscilla There are many examples in literature of a man’s deep feelings of love for a woman. In Longfellow’s account of John Alden and Priscilla, John speaks tenderly of Priscilla: There is not air so sacred, no air so pure and wholesome as the air she breathes and the soil that is pressed by her footsteps. Here for her sake will I stay and like an invisible presence hover around her forever, protecting, supporting her weakness. Notice how John speaks reverently of Priscilla, with a tender desire to protect her from all harm. Woodrow Wilson’s Love for his Wife, Ellen Probably one of the finest examples of true and enduring love is found in the love letters President Woodrow Wilson wrote to his wife, Ellen. After being married for 28 years he writes from the White House: I adore you. No president but myself ever had exactly the right kind of wife. I am certainly the most fortunate man alive. And in another letter: I can think of nothing while I write but only you. My days are not so full of anxiety and a sense of deep responsibility as they are of you, my absent darling, who yet plays the leading role in my life every minute of the day. These letters were taken from The Priceless Gift, a collection of letters between the two of them. Each is a love letter, tender and devoted. In every case the woman awakens his feelings. They don’t just arise within the man. The woman must awaken them. Some women think only a few men are romantic. This is simply not true. The tender letters of President Wilson were a surprise to those who knew his personality, that of an unemotional schoolmaster.
Helen was born in Mesa, Arizona in 1920. She was the youngest daughter in a family of seven – four girls and three boys. Her father was a dentist. Later the family moved to Phoenix where she attended Phoenix Union High School. When she was eighteen she attended Brigham Young University where she met her future husband, Aubrey Andelin. After they were married they resided in Los Angeles where Aubrey attended dental school at the University of Southern California and served a term in the military at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, California. Helen’s dedication to improve marriages began in 1962 in Fresno, California where she taught marriage classes to women, drawing from her own resources. Her unadvertised classes grew rapidly from a small group of eight to a large audience of 170. Women poured into her classes from all walks of life – all religions, races and cultures. The most amazing thing about her teachings, however, was the lives it was changing. Marriages that had become dull and uninteresting became romantic again and those in deep trouble were rescued and renewed. Her teachings offered solutions and saved many marriages from divorce. The project she entered into with a light heart now became a project she viewed with soberness. With the success of her marriage classes she conceived the idea of writing her book, Fascinating Womanhood. The first printing of her book was an immediate sell-out. The classes continued to grow and soon other women requested permission to teach the Fascinating Womanhood course. This created a greater demand for her book, which in turn created a demand in the book stores. Her husband formed a small publishing company to meet this need. In nine years sales totaled near 500.000 copies in hardback. In 1974 Helen signed a contract with Bantam Books to publish the book in paperback for mass-market distribution. In 1975 Bantam Books sent the Andelins on extensive publicity trips where they were interviewed on all major newspapers, TV programs and radio stations, to a total of over 300 programs. Mrs. Andelin was a featured guest on numerous national shows, among them Phil Donahue, Barbara Walters, Hough Downs and Larry King. In six months the book sold over 500,000 copies in the mass market and has continued to sell. To date Fascinating Womanhood has sold well over two million copies. Mrs. Andelin has also lectured to many diverse groups, especially university and church groups. Interest in the book and classes has continued, not only in America but in foreign countries. Mrs. Andelin has made personal appearances in Brazil, Japan, Australia and The Philippines. The book has been translated into Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, French and Indonesian. She has also written two other books – The Fascinating Girl, a book to single women, and All About Raising Children. Her husband, Aubrey, is the author of the well-known book, Man of Steel and Velvet.
