Is it the U.S presidential elections?
No.
Is it an earthquake? No.
Is it the election of a new mayor? No.
Is it the firing and hiring of a football coach? Yes.. This is the story of just such an event. This is a fictionalized version of real stories and real people who lived long ago. The undefeated football season summarized here actually once took place at Rutgers University.. Other events actually took place primarily at St Lawrence University. Yes there was an outstanding season. Yes there actually was the horny sociologist. Yes, there actually was a beautiful woman we have called “yes”. Yes, the sex in the chapel and the ridiculous faculty smoker actually happened; And the coach is the hero, or is he? And there has to be a villain, but who is the villain in our story? And who is the heroine?

Wrestling is as much a part of winter in Iowa as is snow and cold. Dreams of state championships begin in elementary school and, since 1972, come to fruition - or heart-breakingly fall short - at an arena in Des Moines in February or March. In 2011, the tournament finals sold out for the 24th consecutive year. Individuals and teams carve their names on the sport’s history tree each year. Some champions were blind, some were deaf, some were amputees but all earn the respect of thousands for their work ethic - a hallmark of the state’s populace. Is this heaven? No, it’s better than that. It’s high school wrestling in Iowa!

In 1957, when very few Mexican-Americans were familiar with the game of golf, and even less actually played it, a group of young caddies which had been recruited to form the San Felipe High School Golf Team by two men who loved the game, but who had limited access to it, competed against all-white schools for the Texas State High School Golf Championship. Despite having outdated and inferior equipment, no professional lessons or instructions, four young golfers with self-taught swings from the border city of Del Rio, captured the State title. Three of them took the gold, silver and bronze medals for best individual players. This book tells their story from their introduction to the game as caddies to eventually becoming champions.

Newspaper accounts describe the Thanksgiving Day football game between Jack Yates and Phillis Wheatley High Schools as the annual largest attended schoolboy game in America. Thousands of football fans came, "Dressed to Kill" with eager anticipation and jubilant spirits to enjoy pep rallies, parades, Thanksgiving Day breakfast and dances. The halftime activities were eloquent with its pageantry, beautiful automoblies, floats, marching bands and drill units, and the crowning of the Miss Wheatley and Miss Yates. "Let the Games Begin", is a chapter which provide highlights of each game played. The Classic was an annual rivalry between two teams like none other. The competition between the two schools were of epic proportion during their 39 years of play.
