SOCIAL SCIENCE - Emigration & Immigration

By Travis Barrett

Welcome to Darwin’s world, where the hawk kills the dove and the lion eats the gazelle, where the strong destroy the weak, and the keen-witted defeat the dull-witted. Most people think of illegal immigration as a political, moral, or economic problem. It is all of these, of course, but more fundamentally it is a mechanism of survival-survival of the fittest, those whose numbers increase and eventually dominate an environment.

Immigration, legal or illegal, is a problem only for those who are displaced by the growing numbers of intruding groups. Naturalistically, it is what species do-expand, dominate, and conquer in order to survive, It is simply the way of life. Immigrants flee overpopulated environments having insufficient economic, natural, or residential resources and invade environments having surpluses of these resources. When the invading groups encounter the inhabitants of an invaded environment, conflict occurs because the invasion means displacement and competition.

When Europe's populations were trapped in poverty and hopelessness, Europeans migrated to other regions of the world. Some migrated to North America, where they destroyed or displaced the indigenous peoples. Today, populations are again increasing beyond the carrying capacity of their environments and economies. In order to survive and successfully reproduce, members of excessive populations migrate to environments possessing greater abundance.

Migrant populations are hardy, desperate, ingenious, hard working, and aggressive. Resident populations are often complacent and even welcoming, thus caught unawares. When the resident population believes that its national, cultural, and economic environments are threatened, the relationship between the two groups becomes conflicting and adversarial. Usually the outcome is either one side wins, assimilation occurs, or both sides remain in a continuing state of conflict.

Strangers is a story that offers a surreal depiction of illegal immigration.
