“I enjoyed reading How to Become a Successful Black Man I feel that she gives her readers real insight on the plight of today’s young black male. But, she also gives readers hope and encouragement when looking into the lives of some of the world’s greatest, most successful black men. … Each of them gives helpful information in what prerequisites are needed in order to succeed in that specific profession. The really interesting and heartwarming stories are like a beacon of light and hope for black mothers, and for black women and men everywhere. I, being a black mother of a biracial young adult son, found this book to be interesting, insightful and full of wisdom. I hope that I can get my son to read this book, or at least hope to be able to share some of the author’s stories with him.”

On a sunny Saturday morning at Chicago's Simeon Career Academy back in 2010 at a Concerned Christian Men (CCM) Breakfast I was engaged in a stimulating personal conversation with the late Dr. William Lackland. His insights “rocked my world.” That conversation eventually inspired me to write a book. This book!

Dr. Lackland shared some of his university experiences with me. The dean advised him to enroll into several remedial courses including reading and math. The dean’s attitude conveyed his doubts about William’s ability to pass these courses, much less completing the university curriculum. Dr. Lackland refused to let this stranger deter him from earning his Ph.D., in Chemistry, no less.

Listening to Dr. Lackland’s story whet my appetite for other successful African-American men’s stories. I had a strong suspicion that African-American men though different in many ways, are very much alike. Most Black men continue to be confronted by seemingly overwhelming odds, but WE persist. This realization motivated me to use our experiences with success to create a directory of African American men.

I shared my directory idea with friends and asked them for help. It was my vision to make it a team project. I got no takers. Thus, I changed the idea from a directory to a book. Over several months I researched and read the literature about successful Black boys and men. I then created an online survey to be completed by a few African American men I know.

The survey delved into their childhood, family, employment, profession, and the like. More than fifty men of color were sent the survey by email to complete. Thirteen of them completed the survey. I have worked and learned from time to time with most of these men. Thus, I have had personal experiences with each of them.

I wanted to use successful African American men’s life experiences as a blueprint for Black boys and young men who are striving to become successful. I want them to realize that the men that they are reading about were once boys just like them.

Perhaps the most daunting graduate school requirement is the development of an action research Master’s thesis. This capstone task requires unprecedented amounts of time, energy, and verbiage. Designed to take stress out of the thesis-writing equation, this student-friendly comprehensive handbook glides the reader through a 28-step process from developing a focal topic to defending a scholarly thesis. Framing each chapter as a one-week action assignment, the authors have broken down the process into manageable chunks to enable students writers to achieve an immediate sense of completion at every step. By using this scaffolding approach the the authors encourage the student researcher to focus on one part of the process rather than the total, sometimes overwhelming, final product. With the exception of the “Review of the Literature” section which takes several weeks to complete, all other thesis sections can and should be timed out for seven days. The Authors primary objective was to empower the student researcher to accomplish each of the steps in the process while never loosing site on the product that will help the children in their classrooms. Whether developing an Abstract or writing in-text citations, student researchers are guided throughout he nuances of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Associations, 6th Edition.
