This book is not a hipper-than-thou book like "Letter to a Christian Nation" - not exactly - although it can be said that this writer wrote for two University of Wisconsin student newspapers. He went to Woodstock (Illinois) and has been to Harvard (Illinois). He once held a very high position in Washington (Illinois, in a tree as a tree surgeon). This book is not designed to impress the left-wing nerds who now dominate "Education," but, first impressions aside, it is a scholarly work that has dug up some eye-opening facts about the roots of our culture of Americanism. The author is a semi-retired Yooper who writes a weekly column for www.RenewAmerica.us. "Qualifications?" While many pundits seem to think that "history" began with the Summer of Love, 1967, this author overheard more history in first grade in a one-roomed school in the 1940s than most people today hear in a lifetime. His main point is that "An attack on your ROOTS is an attack on YOU." Any old tree surgeon could tell you that, and one of the other main points of this book is that the "Youth Revolution" of the 1960s was a copy-cat image of the Nihilism movement in Russia in the 1860s (and "Generation XYZ" knows even less about the American Revolution than the Russian one). Books now take a back seat to the boob tube. Some people actually try to avoid the news like the plague, but as Francis Bacon once predicted. "Books will speak plain when counsellors blanche." This book is so "plain," so different, and so "definitive" that the author's long-range goal is to restore some balance to Big Education, or - whichever happens first - to get the ruler of Red China to swim across the Bering Strait with the Olympic torch between his teeth.

Those who attempt to teach moral and ethical behavior soon run into a problem. Even though there might be (and there often is) much agreement on what, there is usually also considerable disagreement on why, and people, being what they are, are inclined to give more attention to the latter than the former. The disagreement arises when people try to account for their views, try to give reasons why others should accept their prescriptions. When such discussions take place, almost always two points of view will emerge. Some will hold that the guidelines for moral teaching come to us from something greater than human opinion, from religion of some sort; we may call those who argue along these lines authoritarians or outsiders. Others will maintain that we humans create or make up our own guidelines. We find them within ourselves. We may call these creationists or insiders. The two views (here greatly simplified) are usually regarded as incompatible and mutually exclusive, and perhaps they are. But it is not always necessary to take a stand on one or the other. We are all of us too much in need of moral and ethical direction to give over much energy to arguing about the why of it all. For that reason, this essay attempts to set forth an ethical perspective that insiders, outsiders, all-siders, in-betweeners, and anyone else (excluding those who do not want ethical guidance) might find acceptable whatever their philosophies. Such an attempt will of course never be entirely successful, but even a little success is worth the try. These remarks make no claim to being new or original. In fact, their claim is to the contrary. What is presented in this essay goes way, way back, back to whenever humans first began to wonder how best to get along with each other. That wondering in time gave form to what we call "traditional ethics." If we find them unfamiliar, it is not because they have not yet been discovered, but because they have been forgotten. As Samuel Johnson said, our need is not to be instructed, but to be reminded. The Other Way is intended to be a reminder.
