Their lives were hard and monotonous, but Father made each day’s trek less burdensome by singing out his praises for finding their last meal or simply pleasant weather.  Mother joined in with a beautiful harmony and the children sang along with zealous spirits.  Only their grandfather remained silent.

His granddaughter believed that her grandmother had taken his voice, when she perished on their journey a week now past.  Mother told her daughter that her grandfather would need time to heal and his voice would return when he found his heart again.  It was at that very hour the little girl decided to search diligently for his heart so her grandfather could sing again once more.  Every journey became a fervent search for the lost heart.…

As the story unfolds a spoon, kitchen knife and spatula are dancing around like little children playing by themselves when Mom and Dad have left the house.  It seems to be a fantasy at first but gains significance when the character, Mr. Hobbs, dreams of going to the beach, a departure from his usual way of life, just as his cooking tools had departed from their own ways in his absence.  It is as though the flour that has been the principal ingredient in his life of baking cakes and cookies has succeeded in doing something to help him right away.  He is given hope, which will help him to achieve a degree of independence.

The story "Jessie's Big Tryout" is about alittle girl that's trying out for a softball team.  There are so many other girls at the tryout that Jessie doesn't think she has a chance.  She was so dedicated she even went to practice when she was sick. When she first wanted to play all she could think of was hitting a homerun or making a double play. Even hearing the crowd cheer excited her to play.   However, after practicing with her coach for just a few day's, and talking with her Grandfather it reminded her the real reason to play is for the fun of the game, and that when you play you need to have good sportsmanship while you play.  It's not about winning or being the best on the team it's about you and your friends having fun. The book is teaching children to play a game for fun not to just win. When children play games there always has to be a winner and a loser.  Parents hate to see their children lose,  but as parents that is our job.  We have to teach them to lose and try to be good about it.  Just as we have to teach them to be good winners.  So they don't rub it in when they win.  We want them happy.  Just as we wouldn't want them to pout if they lost.  This book is trying to teach children to be a good winner or a good loser at an early age.  It is  explaining good sportsmanship in a very simple way.  With similar experiences I had growing up as a child.

The book "Jessie's Big Tryout" has bright colors, big pictures that cover the pages, and big wording.  The stories message could be reached by pre-k and up.

This is a story of a kind young Martian named Xnod, who received a message to appear before the other Martians; he had no idea what was about to happen.  As he entered the Royal Chamber he was stunned when a booming voice told him, “You are banished to Earth, leave now!”  He was rejected by the whole Martian community.

As Xnod was leaving his home planet, and wondering what he would find on Earth, he had a ‘Road to Damascus’ type experience which amounted to much needed help from above.  This started him on a happy and exciting new journey in his life, with new friends, and a new place to call home.

I know it’s not right,

but these silly Blue Boo

are just afraid of the night!

The Boo Eating Snark is one book in a series of children’s stories by Uncle Jake called  Tales of the Boo.  Uncle Jake takes a whimsical look at the magical, mystical world of the Boo – fanciful creatures who live along Lake Walleywakoo.
