Twelve year old Freddy Farlittle becomes a Wizard when he entered an unknown magical world. He and his younger sister Freda found an old wooden chest in their attic hidden behind a stack of cardboard boxes. When Freddy opened the chest to see what was in it, he disappeared into another dimention. He met an old Wizard named Hershel who warned him of Mardo. Mardo is a bad wizard who later showed up in Freddy's dreams to try and steal away the powers that Hershal gave him. Freddy fought Mardo for his powers and win. Mardo vanished and was never seen again.

Bear goes to sleep for the winter when the geese fly south, just as his mother told him. She forgives him and he gives her a big bear hug. Finally they are seen disappearing over the horizon to find that wonderful place, The Far Beyond, where they .lived happily ever after.
