For so many years, I have watched the way soccer is being played in the States.  I though the game should be played with more fines, intensity and creativity.  I also wished more goals were scored because the soccer net is very wide compared to most other sports.  The other concern of mine is the way soccer is being promoted or lack of promotion of the game in the States.  Lack of goals or low scores in the game is another source of concern.  These ideas have being with me for most of the time and I finally summed the courage to take up my pen and write this book “SOCCER SOLUTIONS:  Generating more Goals and Winning the Big Games”. I hope this book will help improve the management of soccer, coaching of the game, playing and the promotion of this “beauty game” according to fabulous PELE, the greatest person that ever played this game. Above all, I want to see more goals scored at the games because it will generate more interest among soccer fans and convert casual fans into true fans. I could not understand why a net as wide as in soccer is invisible to the attacking teams. I hope this book will make the net more visible and results in scoring of more goals.  It should be noted, however, that this book is not replacing the good works of coaches but a supplement of the great jobs done by them.  My philosophy about the game revolves around more shooting of the ball more within the 18 yards line and scoring of more goals.  You need to the shoot ball in order to score goals and there is no scoring without shooting and no winning without goals.

The night air was crisp, even at the 72 degrees that enveloped the 2000 fans that sat and watched as the Westland Dragons took on the Dallas Sting for the U-21 Women’s National Soccer Championship at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Field. Both teams had battled to a 1-1 tie over 90 minutes, and now both were coming to the end of the second 15-minute overtime tied at one goal apiece.  A shoot-out was inevitable, and how ironic I thought. This is how it all began for this team; this is what set this team apart from others when they were only 12 years old back in the fall of 1994. The whistle of the center official sounded and I knew what lie in store for our girls. They had been here before; they had all been through so much. Ashleigh, Jessie and Kendall were all on the bench due to injuries, and our back-up keeper, Christa, was asking me why she had to do this. I knew this time was different, this time it was for so much more than a trophy or a title. This time it was for all the games, all the seasons and all the players that had come and gone. This was going to be a game of a lifetime - this was their game for all seasons.

The Lady Dragons were born on July 7th, 1994, and I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a warm night, and the heat of the day had parched the already dry field to a golden brown, with spots of green, as 45 young 12 year old girls showed up in mass to a tryout for the “New Premier team” about to be formed. Forty-five young girls all with the same dream: to someday play Women’s Major League Soccer. But now, it was a much smaller dream that lie ahead, they were all very sure that they would be the one, the one out of 45 that would catch the Coach’s eye and be chosen to be part of the 18 player roster.

About the Book

Davon Goes Fishing at the Big Green Yucky Lake, by new children’s writer, Deborah Godwin-Starks is a wonderful story told through the eyes of her three-year old grandson.

While visiting his grandparents’ farm, Davon asks his grandpa to take him fishing.  He is eager to go on this adventure though he has never been fishing before.  When he gets to the lake he is surprised to find that it is not at all what he expected.  He is challenged by many of the scenes and sounds he sees and hears on this exploration.

However, with patience, endurance, and lots of encouragement from his grandpa, he learns many of life’s lessons on letting go, being brave in the face of adversity, and learning to be comfortable in different surroundings.

Davon Goes Fishing at the Big Green Yucky Lake is illustrated by talent Chicago artist, Seitu Hayden, who takes the story as told by a three-year old and turns it into a masterpiece of the spoken world with illustrations.

Description of the book “FISH TALES” by Julia Hopton

This little book depicts the author’s love of fishing in simple but graphic verse.

It covers every aspect of fishing from forgetting to listen to the weather forecast to sitting on the bank of a river waiting for a salmon to jump.

The author’s thoughts from the river bank are descriptive and seasonal. There are walks along the banks, there are dogs that dig holes in the banks and evening fishing when you get tangled up on the bank.

There are memories of visits to Scotland to fish for salmon, and a meander down the River Wye. Even a recipe on how to cook trout.

Whether a salmon fisher or trout fisher, there is something to relate to in this collection of fishing anecdotes.

The book is dedicated to the author’s late husband Geoffrey Hopton.  He inspired and encouraged both the fishing and the verse.  The last poem was read at his funeral, and most fishermen will understand the need to pick up a rod and wander off down to a river in times of stress.

Lenny Puddock writes of his experiences as a Chicago Cub during the 2011 baseball season. Puddock is a 32-year-old physical therapist for the Indianapolis National Institute of Fitness and Health who attended Randy Hundley’s Fantasy Camp. Part of the Fantasy Camp experience is his developing friendship with Gertrude Castellano, a waitress who becomes a singing star. They romance at a distance. Puddock is invited to the Cubs’ Spring Training after an outstanding performance at the Camp. The Cubs offer him a contract with the Daytona Class A team and he accepts. Puddock is moved up to Class AA Tennessee in mid-May and is called up to the Cubs in mid-July. He was batting .378. In mid-August Mike Quade resigns as manager. Ryne Sandberg, who had an escape clause in his contract with a Phillies Minor League team, becomes the Cubs manager. When Puddock joined the parent club, the Cubs were 10 ½ games out of first place. By the end of August they are four from the Wild Card spot. In the waning days of August the roster was two short due to injuries. Sandberg did not want to disrupt the Iowa or Tennessee playoff-bound teams, so he activated Greg Maddux and himself, thinking the roster had to contain the maximum 25 players. Plans were to activate two players before the August 31 midnight deadline but due to an intern’s goof not recognizing the difference in Eastern Standard Time and Central Standard Time, the move came too late. In essence the Cubs would have only a 23-player Post-Season roster. The Cubs win their Division and League playoffs and enter World Series for the first time in 76 years. In an amazing ninth inning of the seventh game, the Cubs win the Series.
