On a cold, blustery November day in 1718, three young men late of County Tyrone in Ireland's northern province of Ulster, bade the crew of the good ship Cape Fear a fond farewell before descending the gangplank onto Philadelphia's crowded wharf to begin a new life they prayed would be more prosperous than the one they'd left behind beyond the stormy North Atlantic. Three months earlier, Samuel and John MacLean and their cousin, Brian Lynch, finally made the heart-wrenching decision to leave Ireland and their loved ones in order to seek a better life in America. Like thousands of their countrymen, who the American colonists called "Scots Irish," the MacLean brothers and their cousin were now part of the mass exodus from Ulster bound for America. This great migration of Protestant Irishmen was destined to continue unabated for the next fifty years or so until America's vast, far-flung frontier stretching from western Pennsylvania south to the Carolinas would eventually be filled with fiery-tempered, independent-minded Scots-Irish whose desire for land on which to "grow their bread" and raise their blue-eyed, red and blond-haired children seemed insatiable.
After four long years in Philadelphia, the three young Ulstermen, after serving the terms of their indentures, were finally able to head west in search of land of their own. The eastern, blocking-edge of the Alleghenies forced the lads to turned south into Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. It was in this beautiful valley that reminded them so much of Ireland that they built their first log cabin. In the years ahead, each one, in turn, would meet, fall in love, marry and sire children. Later descendants of MacLeans and Lynches would courageously meet and overcome challenges arising from hostile Indians, the French bent on gaining control of North America from their age-old enemy, Great Britain, and the British whose oppression they could no longer endure. This fast-paced, romantic, historically-accurate, generational saga continues the quest for freedom and a better way of life began in the author's first book, "From Glen to Glen." "Land Beyond" as well as "From Glen to Glen" should cause Americans living today to appreciate their heritage even more as they are reminded of the courage and fortitude of those hearty, freedom-loving men and women who sacrificed so much in shaping what has now become the greatest nation in the world.

Improbable Heroes is the true story of how Jews were saved by extraordinary acts of bravery by ordinary Italians and the clergy.

The vain and often delusional Mussolini sought to ingratiate himself with Hitler by adopting Germany’s anti-Semitic programs and laws.  Following the Italian leader’s overthrow and a German takeover of Italy, some Jewish leaders worked feverishly with the Catholic clergy and partisans to hide, disguise and spirit Jews out of the harm’s way.  Catholic and Jewish artisans counterfeited false papers, baptismal certificates and ration cards; Jews were dressed as priests and nuns and hidden in convents, churches and abbeys—some even in the Vatican.

The Germans, harassed by Christian and Jewish partisans, and furious at being unable to round up significant numbers of Jews, committed unspeakable atrocities against Italian citizens and clergy.  Improbable Heroes traces the terrifying experiences of Jewish families, Italian and non-Italian, who dodged the Gestapo, traveled under false papers and disguise, and were hidden by brave priests, nuns and citizens, some right under the noses of the SS.  Others were escorted as “pilgrims”—Jews dressed as priests—through German lines to safety by the gentle monks of St. Francis of Assisi.

Improbable Heroes also explores how the plans of Pope Pius XI to condemn the Nazi persecution of the Jews were derailed by his untimely death and the ambivalence of his successor, Pope Pius XII, to condemn the Germans, but balanced by the aggressive efforts of some cardinals and bishops, when they ordered, sometimes in the pope’s name, Catholic clergy to assist Jews, and Catholic churches and convents to hide them.

As a result of acts of improbable heroes, over 85% of the Jews in Italy survived, a rate unmatched in any other German-occupied European country.  This is their proud story.

You thought that when the Romans left, the Saxons came; at least that was what we were all told in school. There are precise dates as well The Romans left in 410 AD and the Saxons came in 440AD. Somewhere in this clear cut time lies a problem called the Arthurian legends. It is as if the clear cut strata in an archaeological dig are subjected to a microscopic analysis to reveal a rather less clear cut profile.

Further, we all have a concept of King Arthur that has been handed to us since the time of Mallory. So that was Arthur was it? Wrong. The only invaders were Saxons, right? Wrong. Arthur was something to do with Merlin-right? Wrong. We are always told the truth by historians, right? Wrong. In terms of what we know, the history has been defined within those references which have led to a distortion of the history.

Be in no doubt that King Arthur existed and there was more than one. Unravelling the ancient sources such as Gildas, Nennius, Bede and other works leads us out of a fairytale of Hollywood into the harsh reality of the early post Roman empire; a world of Civil war and Celtic invasion.

What has been learned is that there was more than one Arthur, in fact many names were repeated and confused, Ambrosius, Ambrosius Aurielanus, Uther, Arthur, Maximus (which one would you like) and Vortigern at a time when not only were the Saxons coming, so were the Scots (the real name of the Irish as conferred by the Romans), Danes at the same time as a tripartite Roman civil war was taking place. So the history of the time is clear?-please read on, its time to become confused.
