Scat is a story about a highly intelligent young boy named Lil’ Fellow, his life, his family, and those he interacts with throughout the early years of his life. The reader will get to know and love each character they are reading about. The setting for this story is the early 1900s in a small town. This was the time when schools were still segregated, the time when sharecropping was popular, the days when whites and blacks—races—weren’t treated the same in all respects but worked side by side to get whatever jobs needed doing done. You will not want to miss reading about Pa’s merchant marine days, and Mr. Sato, the Japanese gentleman he meets at sea and establishes a friendship with. Sato plays a part in Lil’ Fellow’s life, too. There is Charlie Oates, a black neighbor of the Butts’s. He and his family play a great part in Lil’ Fellow’s life and the town’s. Nor will you want to miss Ms. Henrietta, the schoolteacher; Roof, the school bully; A. H. Slocham, the preacher; Sara, Lil’ Fellow’s first love; Cutie, Lil’ Fellow’s last love; and the many other interesting characters that intertwine in Lil’ Fellow’s life.

Lil’ Fellow, being highly intelligent, faces many challenges in his life. He has a hard time as he begins first grade because of this intelligence and a teacher with a bad attitude toward the male species. He, also has a hard time because of his stature. He is very short for his age. This makes him a prime target for the school bully. It is because of this teacher and the school bully that Lil’ Fellow’s pa and ma decide to home-school him. Their objective is to get him to seventh grade in a year’s time. By doing this, he will not have the same teacher the following school term.

Pa uses this time to teach Lil’ Fellow how to “protect himself,” too. Pa, being an old merchant marine, had learned many ways of survival during his voyages. Ma did not approve of all of the things Pa had learned, and definitely didn’t want Lil’ Fellow learning them. This was one of many secrets between Lil’ Fellow and Pa.

The biggest obstacle Lil’ Fellow will face will be his requiring that “nip” of medicine to face his everyday challenges. He gets his first “nip” quite by accident after all of the happenings the very first day of school. He believes that “nip” makes him “the man,” makes him happy, and takes away his troubles.

This book is an intriguing and interesting book for the young and older adult. This book will remind one of the old Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn stories. It is exciting, romantic, and heartwarming; the reader is not only drawn into the story but also truly will not want to put it down.

In the end, Lil’ Fellow finds a place for himself in life. He realizes that his family, friends, and God are what he needs to be happy, not the “nip.” His intelligence and his stature may not change, but his attitude toward life does.

Anna Francelli had a modest row home in a blue-collar town where her son Johnny and his friends hung out during their formative years in the sixties. They were good, fun-loving kids who did what kids do until they were gradually drawn into the troublesome events unfolding around them: a divisive war in Vietnam, raucous protests, and strained race relations. But through it all, Anna’s home remained a refuge and, for a core of the boys, Anna became a pillar of strength for over forty years.

Sweeping through almost half a century, Anna’s Boys provides insight into the unique perspective of a baby boom generation that fought one war in its youth and, in later years, watched another develop in the Middle East. At times funny and heartwarming, at times moving and poignant, Anna’s Boys tells a timeless story of personal commitment, loyalty, sacrifice and triumph, with characters you will learn to love, set in a small town that could very well be your own

What if the United States really was not the land of the government of the people, by the people, for the people? What if instead of the duly elected President and Congress, there was a second, secret corporate organization with Government ties dominating the affairs of state within the United States? Was Pearl Harbor a plot conceived by Roosevelt and Churchill to get an isolationist U.S. into WWII? What force thrust Harry Truman into a position to lead us into the atomic age? How was he elected, and who really killed JFK? Why did Lyndon Johnson leave the White House at the height of the Vietnam War? Why did we stop at the gates of Baghdad during the first Desert War against Saddam Hussein? The political and military leaders of the latter sixty years of the 20th Century come alive in these pages, and the historical events actually took place. Where does the line between fiction and historical fact become blurred? The answer to all of these questions is Knight’s Code.

It is 1943 and the big war in Europe is now in its fourth year. The Allies have begun to take the fight to Germany and bombing raids on German cities are now an almost daily and nightly occurrence. As cities are being destroyed, panic-stricken survivors are frantically searching for relatives to find shelter with. Refugees, driven out of recently occupied Russian territories in the east, are now arriving with only small pieces of luggage as their only possessions and they are in desperate need of places to stay. Our small house, which we already shared with another family, soon nearly doubles its occupancy as desperate relatives in need of shelter kept arriving.

All eligible men are away fighting at one of Hitler’s many fronts. The overwhelming need to support this effort has left the country drained of nearly everything and has forced mothers alone to protect and provide for their families during this most difficult period of history. Fear, hunger, and the struggle to survive have become a way of life. As children we did not always understand the serious time in which we lived, however, we learned to assess the fear from the expressions on our mother’s faces, especially so during the frequent air raids. Often it was their despair that we quietly observed while they struggled with the constant inability to adequately provide for their families. In late1943, my family received the news that Dad had recently become a prisoner of war.

By late1944, it became clear that Germany was losing the war. Fear that Russian troops would reach our area ahead of American or British forces became the real concern now. Just days prior to Germany’s capitulation, our occupation occurred, and this event would forever remain in my memory and directly affect much of my young life. The events, as described, were real and have been written as seen through the eyes of a young boy.

Following our liberation, we came to realize the enormous atrocities that had occurred and learned of people whose suffering had been far greater than ours, and to those people I wish to offer my deepest respect.
