THE KEY TO MY CHILDREN: HANNAH CAN TALK WITH HER HANDS is about a four year old little girl who uses sign language to communicate, or, as Miss Susan and Miss Nancy say, “she talks using her hands not her voice”.  The teachers expect Hannah to talk someday, but until then, they have taught her sign language.  Feeling powerful in her world can minimize frustration and enable her to learn.  After the other students see the power of sign language, they are excited to learn it themselves.  It also helps the other children realize Hannah is learning and that they can understand her now if they learn some simple signing words.  Hannah’s key to learning is sign language. Hannah has a lable of Mild Mental Disability.

THE KEY TO MY CHILDREN: WILHEMINA’S STRONG WILL is about a three year old little girl who was born eleven weeks preterm, a “preemie.”  She was in the hospital over 200 days and had to fight to live.  Her strong will and determination to thrive are still displayed today by her feisty personality in the Early Childhood classroom.  When Wilhemina ‘acts out’ during circle time, the other children giggle and enjoy her funny antics.  The teachers realize the need to help guide her behavior in a positive direction and yet allow her to feel free to talk, thereby diminishing her frustration from her language delay which enables her to learn.  “Shape the spirit, not damage it” is the teachers’ motto.  The teachers secretly enjoy Wilhemina’s spunk but also realize they have to gently show Wilhemina and the other children proper conduct in the classroom.  Wilhemina’s key to learning is her strong will to survive and take care of herself. Wilhelmina was a "preemie" and was placed in the classroom with a label of Developmental Delay.

Special Ed takes the reader on an autobiographical journey through the life of someone succeeding in spite of his dyslexia. Receiving little assistance in identifying and dealing with his learning difficulties, Ed perseveres to create a life he wants rather than allowing others to dictate his future based on limited assessments of his abilities. The book tells the story of an individual who although intelligent and creative consistently performs well below average academically. After high school graduation he realizes he is unable to accept the limited life choices available to him as a result of his failing grades. Ultimately, he creates his own path, and achieves the full life he envisions for himself.

& n b s p ; & nbsp;          The book focuses not only on dyslexia but the wide range of difficulties students encounter, both academically and emotionally, throughout their education. It illustrates that no matter what challenges a person faces, they must follow their inner voice toward their own personal happiness and success. It provides encouragement for all students and insight for those who sustain them.

The Child Left Behind. Is this your child?! Most parents, and unfortunately most schools, have little idea of what the educational performance of individual children ought to be. Grades on their report cards rarely, if ever, provide insight into what educational achievement should be expected for individual children.

The purpose of this book is to alert parents and teachers to specific symptoms of brain inefficiencies and help to identify and possibly develop strategies to reduce their impact upon individual so afflicted.

Again parents, and unfortunately most schools, do not appear to understand and evaluate a child’s abilities to achieve academically or behave emotionally and socially. An accepted standard of normal intelligence is a mean (average) intelligence quotient score of 100 with a range of 15 points, plus or minus 5 points, or roughly an IQ score range of 80 to 120. Most parents, and unfortunately many professionals, do not recognize the critical relationship between intellectual ability and academic achievement. Hopefully this book will alert parents to significant factors that affect not only their children’s academic achievement, but impact their emotional and social behavior as well.

Psychiatric “diagnoses” such as autism, attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, and conduct disorder, among a number or others, provide parents and teachers, or even the child so afflicted, with little insight into their behavior. It is the author’s view that these “diagnoses” are primarily used to prescribe psychotropic medications (drugs), with a minimal regard to the potential hazards of their use.

"...I did not want to see problems where there weren’t any, because I was more aware of aspergers than the average parent. Also, teaching children with special needs is quite different than accepting that your beautiful daughter has such needs- a label just makes it all sound so final..."

Aspergers is a ‘hidden disability;’ as it is not a physical disability it does not register automatic understanding. It is a series of developmental disorders known as ‘The Triad of Impairment,’ including: communication, social interaction and inflexible thought/imagination. My child is aspergers, she does not have aspergers- it is not an infectious disease; there is nothing ‘wrong’ with her- she merely has different needs. A label has a tendency to emphasize the negative, not the positive and the person.

This book details Elizabeth’s journey (and that of many families) but also provides valuable information for all families of children touched by aspergers. I have found many aspergers books to be of a clinical nature and not accessible to parents who have just been given a diagnosis; often without subsequent advice and support. In my experience, a diagnosis can be like someone has thrown a grenade at you and is then running away- you are left to deal with the fall-out!

Hopefully, this book is accessible to all and will help people- it has certainly helped me and when Elizabeth is older, I hope it will explain a few things to her. I also hope that it will enlighten professionals who work with her (and others like her.) My point is that I am the closest person to my daughter and I don’t fully know or understand her. How can they? I honestly don't expect them to do so; I do expect them to have an awareness of the condition and to understand that a child who is aspergers has particular needs, even if they are not always apparent.

Have you emotionally suffered through sabotage and administrative loopholes in your place of employment, which resulted in wrongful discharge? Crystal E. Emerson has written an extraordinary and poignant documentation of truth. She has experienced the unethical behavior of administrators and other professionals while working in a public school district in the state of Pennsylvania. During the 2003–2004 academic year, Crystal experienced divided professional loyalties and lived and worked through this emotional dichotomy for 180 days of employment. This was a test of personal and emotional strength and a time to trust her instincts. The law assumes that public school administrators will behave in an ethical manner. The PSEA (Pennsylvania State Education Association) members assume that union representatives will support them during times of professional adversity. This book is a personal account, of a professional position, in which these two assumptions have failed to occur. There is a need for all public school administrators to abide by more strict laws. There is a need to implement a law that requires all observations and evaluations performed by public school administrators to video record the session; this video recording should be submitted to the state department of education due to a mandating law. Such a law would help teachers in extreme situations who have been subjected to heinous actions of administrative personnel. It is Crystal’s hope that her 180-day experience of emotional adversity, sabotage, harassment, and undermining has not occurred in vain. Never before has a book been so poignant and honest! This is an account of utter emotional and professional strength. You will be enticed as you enjoy reading 180 DAYS!

AUTISM IN SCHOOL was inspired by the first time the school counselor had to try to explain Jett and Autism to his Kindergarten class. Children are very visual learners, so I wanted to create a children's book about what an autistic child is like in order to help explain to young classmates what they can expect and how they can help. Knowledge is power, and we're never too young or too old to learn about the changing world around us.
